How does your school district go about downloading apps to a device? Does each cart have a laptop that is synced to the iPads? Are they managed by a central office?
Our district has been looking at different 1:1 options for iPads. Currently, all apps are loaded through the central technology office by placing a request online. My concern is that it will be cumbersome to have the IT people loading and unloading apps now that we will have so many more iPads. From what I have read, many schools have iPad carts that come with laptops and the teachers are able to use the laptop to load apps and remove them based upon what they are working on in the classroom. This is wonderful for two reasons: the teacher can customize individual iPads for differentiation and it allows to the students to access a variety of apps throughout the year without running out of space on the iPad.
Students, just like adults, get bored of using the same app. Draw Something was popular for a while until people got tired of it and went in search of the next big app craze. Teachers need the flexibility to adapt their technology to the immediate needs of their students and maintain student engagement. Please comment below on your experience with downloading apps in a school setting. I'd be so interested to know how your school handles this.
