On February 5th I started new units with my small group enrichment program. My 5th graders are creating their own cultures by researching a time period and an original habitat. From there they must figure out what happened to make their people want to move and set up a community in a new location. How did they get there? What did they bring with them? What sort of government did they set up in their new culture?
How will the Kidblog app increase student engagement in this project and reduce my arch nemesis: paper?

During this planning process students post all of their information on Kidblog. They each have their own account and they also have access to their group's account. So far most posts are being created under the group and most comments under the individual accounts. Each day I post the daily assignment under my blog page. We review these as a class at the carpet and come up with a research game plan before I send them off to work.
Today they uploaded their flags and changed "Group 1" to the name of their new culture. Now we will begin the individual work and students will begin posting teasers on their individual projects (architecture, clothing, dance, anthems, fables, etc.) under their individual pages.
Below are some screen shots from my Kidblog "Create a Culture" project. The screen shots are from my computer but most student work was created via the Kidblog iPad app and various other apps.
